A DIFFERENT KIND OF CONVERSION: INTRODUCING CHURCH × DADE

·

WE BELIEVE old buildings deserve new stories.

in the small Alberta town of Trochu stands a former lutheran church built in 1928. for nearly a century, it has been a place of gathering, ritual and community.

now, it is becoming something new.

welcome to church × dade - part home, part gallery, part studio and an ongoing experiment in what can happen when an old building is given another life.

the transformation has never been about erasing the church’s history. it has been about listening to the building, preserving what matters and introducing new ideas without losing the character that made it extraordinary in the first place.

original details sit alongside contemporary art, furniture and unexpected objects. Weathered materials meet polished surfaces. evidence of the past remains visible, while new layers continue to accumulate.

because restoration does not have to mean returning something to a single moment in time. sometimes it means allowing its story to continue.

the work has been slow, personal and often completed by hand. every repaired surface and considered intervention carries evidence of the people who have cared for the building - those who built it, those who gathered there and those helping to shape what comes next.

the exterior restoration is nearing completion. next, stained glass will bring new colour and life to the stable, continuing the conversation between history and reinvention.

but church × dade is about more than restoring a building.

it represents a shift in how we want to live and work: with more time, more intention and greater freedom to make things simply because they should exist. it gives us room to experiment, create art, work with unexpected materials and reconsider what the next chapter of dade might become.

this is where shredded paper, discarded materials and silk flower petals can be transformed into art. where a former place of worship can become a place for creativity. where old things are not treated as finished, but as material for something new.

church × dade will evolve into a by-appointment gallery, creative studio and gathering place. some days it will be filled with art and conversation. on others, it will be quiet - a place to work, think and notice the way the light moves through the building.

we are not interested in forcing it into a single definition.

like dade itself, the most interesting part may be everything it becomes in between.

church × dade is not a finished project. it is an unfolding story about preservation, transformation and the possibility of beginning again without abandoning what came before.

WE BELIEVE transformation is not about becoming unrecognizable. It is about becoming more fully what you were always capable of being.
