transforming the discarded into the extraordinary.

Darcy Lundgren is a Canadian contemporary artist and designer whose multidisciplinary practice explores the intersection of material, memory, transformation, and the unexpected beauty of everyday objects.

Working across painting, sculpture, and installation, Lundgren challenges conventional ideas of artistic materials and their perceived value. His work transforms the overlooked, the forgotten, and the discarded into richly layered compositions that invite closer examination, both visually and conceptually.

At the centre of his practice is the shred series, an evolving body of mixed-media works created from recycled shredded paper and acrylic paint. What begins as discarded information becomes something entirely new. Fragments of documents, publications, and printed matter are stripped of their original meaning and reconstructed into intricate, highly tactile surfaces.

The resulting works exist somewhere between painting and sculpture. Dense, expressive, and unapologetically physical, they explore the relationship between destruction and creation, chaos and control, permanence and impermanence.

There is something quietly provocative about taking what society considers worthless and transforming it into something worth preserving.

Lundgren's distinctive approach attracted international attention when his work was featured in The New York Times, which described his large-scale shredded-paper compositions as evocative of vertical lawns, their extraordinary surfaces inviting the viewer to touch.

His practice extends beyond the shred series into sculptural assemblages, experimental textiles, and installations incorporating unconventional and reclaimed materials. Artificial silk flower petals, paper, fibre, and found objects become opportunities to reconsider the familiar. Through repetition, accumulation, and transformation, ordinary materials acquire unexpected presence and significance.

An accomplished architectural and interior designer, Lundgren brings decades of experience in proportion, composition, spatial relationships, and materiality to his artistic practice. This architectural sensibility is evident in the structure of his compositions, the physicality of his surfaces, and his ongoing fascination with the relationship between artwork and environment.

In 2007, Lundgren co-founded dade, a multidisciplinary creative studio encompassing contemporary art, architecture, interiors, collectible design, and curated experiences. Together with his partner, Greg Fraser, he has developed a series of unconventional environments that challenge the boundaries between gallery, showroom, and home.

Today, his artistic practice continues to evolve through experimentation, material exploration, and an increasingly personal investigation of transformation and renewal.

Underlying the work is a deceptively simple proposition: nothing is without potential.

What has been discarded can be reconsidered. What has been fragmented can become whole again. And what appears ordinary can, through imagination and intention, become extraordinary.
